SKYHAWK ARTISTRY
BIOGRAPHY
Kayla Van Skyhawk has been immersed in the beauty industry from a young age, often accompanying her mother, Shelly Van Skyhawk, who was the principal makeup artist at the PNW Ballet and Seattle Opera House. This early exposure allowed Kayla to observe her mother's artistry and dedication, igniting her own passion for transformation and beauty. Over the years, she has honed her skills and embraced her love for the craft, making her mark in the industry. Kayla's journey is a testament to the influence of family and the pursuit of one's passion.
Kayla began her journey at the Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy in Bellingham WA, in 2011. Her focus went far beyond the basic curriculum. Leading with a strong emphasis on education and growth, Kayla's passion for avant-garde styling led her to explore the world of creative styling and photo shoots. These artistic pursuits lead her into creating, Skyhawk Artistry, which she launched at 19 years old in 2012. Just four months into beauty school, Kayla submitted her first self-produced photo shoot into the Toni & Guy photographic awards 2012. She became nominated and selected as one of three exceptional students in the United States. Just before completing her cosmetology degree, she was showcased on Talk it up TV. Her runway model was featured on the front page of the Toni & Guy runway show online.
Immediately after graduation, she was hired at Coupe Rokei salon in Seattle, where she completed a rigorous three-year apprenticeship, learning from some of the industry's finest. She continued to promote her work inside and outside the salon. In 2013, she was able to showcase her work alongside her salon team for New Day Northwest, featuring the newest trends for hair color, cuts and styles. In 2014, Kayla was nominated for Best Newcomer Stylist in the Pacific Northwest. She was in charge of a complete transformation from hair color, cut, style, makeup and wardrobe then to have her final look to be photographed then judged. Her efforts awarded her 2nd place in the live competition. After spending 4 years of dedicating herself in the salon, Kayla decided to expand her horizons and relocate to California.
Kayla was actively a part of the freelance hair and makeup industry while in Los Angeles. She primarily styled hair and makeup for magazines, music videos, commercials and films. She gained high-profile clientele, becoming their personal stylist for red carpet events, such as the Grammys.
After a few years of the high stress and intense pace environment of Los Angeles, Kayla decided to relocate to San Francisco. She transitioned back into working in the salon and maintained her freelance business for select clients.
Skyhawk Artistry has evolved significantly over the years through different demographics and time periods in Kayla's life. Currently, Kayla is operating her business from Island Roots Salon in the San Juan Islands. She offers her exceptional services for cut and color clients, weddings and special events. Her main focus is creating a positive environment with high quality services. She is dedicated to making every occasion truly special. Whether it's a milestone celebration or a quick appointment to cover those persistent grey hairs, Kayla brings her artistry to life, ensuring each client feels beautiful and confident.
